For English Foundations, the communication language and course materials will be provided in English.

Course materials that are created by Code Chrysalis are in Japanese, however we also use some third party resources that will be in English.

Is Foundations taught in English or Japanese?

 Nope! Both Foundations & Foundations Lite is completely beginner-friendly. All you need is a willingness to learn, and laptop with Google Chrome installed.

Do I need coding experience to join this class?

(1) You can apply to the program <a href="/apply/foundations?lng=en" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">here</a>.

(2) After you've submitted your application, our admissions team contacts you for a short 15-minute discussion about your coding goals. This is not a test, or an interview you need to prepare for, so please don't worry.

(3) Sign the student contract and we'll see you in class!

What is the application process for this class?

Foundations Lite is our same Foundations curriculum & community, but with greater flexibility. Take lectures at your own pace rather than a scheduled classroom setting.

 What's the difference between Foundations and Foundations Lite?

Foundations is a beginner-friendly course for anyone who’s interested in learning how to code. Certainly, Foundations can amplify your productivity and skill set in your career, especially if you work closely with engineers. Foundations is a perfect segway into the Immersive bootcamp, which comes with a post-graduation job support for product management and software engineering jobs.  Is taking Foundations or Foundations Lite enough for me to get a job?

For Foundations you need a computer that can run <a href="https://www.google.com/chrome/" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google Chrome</a> and <a href="https://code.visualstudio.com/" rel="noreferrer noopener">Visual Studio Code</a>.

For onsite classes you need a laptop you can comfortably bring to the school. For remote classes you need a computer and internet speed that can handle being in a video chat for 3+ hours. 

Please note, there are stricter computer requirements for the Immersive course.

 Do I need a certain type of computer?

Once you complete the application, you will receive an email with a link to book a slot with our staff for a quick 15 minutes interview. You can either come to our school or have your interview or Google Hangouts. 

The interview is just for us to understand more about your goals and answer any questions you have. You are also welcome to ask any concerns you have.

For non-native English speakers, you can also check if your English level is in line with what is required for taking the courses. We will also ask if you can attend all lessons.

 If you cannot attend all the classes in the first week and have to make more than 3 absences we suggest you take the class at another time

What is expected at the interview?

Life happens, we understand. If you need to cancel or reschedule, please look for the event we’ve set up on your google calendar and click on the appropriate links.

Can I reschedule the technical interview?

Congratulations! You are officially enrolled in Foundations.

We will send out an email prior to the start of the course. Be on the lookout for these messages, they contain crucial information for a smooth Day 1 of the course, as well as links to useful self-study resources if you want to get a head start.

 What happens after I pay?

We accept credit cards and bank transfers to our Japanese bank account.

If you’re new to making transfers to Japanese banks from abroad, we recommend using <a href="https://transferwise.com" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank"> TransferWise.</a>

After you’ve initiated the transfer, send us an email and we will confirm with you that we’ve received it. All transfer fees are to be covered by the sender.

How do I pay my tuition?

 Is it possible to pay by credit card, PayPal, etc?

We do not offer deferment, except for rare circumstances. Deferment is on a case-by-case basis and depends largely on the candidate's strengths, the financial status of the company, and the class.

Part-Time Intro to Programming Courses

Foundations & Foundations Lite

For the Immersive Bootcamp, we do not take beginners. You must have a basic programming knowledge and pass our technical interview.

We highly encourage beginners to join our community of motivated learners and take our Foundations: Intro to Programming course, which will catch you up to speed with the basic programming knowledge in one month and adequately prepare you for the technical interview.

I am a beginner. Can I get into the Immersive or Immersive Part-Time?

Immersive Part-Time is a fully remote course that offers flexibility to upskill while maintaining your daytime commitments. Immersive Part-Time students will be required to watch lectures as homework, while class time will be devoted to sprint reviews, time with instructors, projects, and hacking time.

The courses share the same curriculum and projects, however there will no API Week in the Immersive Part-Time. Additionally, the public-facing tech talk and Outcomes Week required in our full-time course are not mandatory in our part-time program.

Are there any differences between the Full-Time Immersive and the Part-Time Immersive course?

We offer the Immersive in English and Japanese.

As for course material, the English Immersive will all be in English, and for the Japanese Immersive Program most of it will be in Japanese but some third-party material will be in English.

Students will have access to both English and Japanese curriculum material, whether you take the English or Japanese Immersive.

Do you teach the Immersive in English or Japanese?

Our curriculum is divided into a few portions, computer science, server-side, front-end, continuous delivery, technical leadership and post-graduation preparation. All of our curriculum is delivered in a project format, using pair programming and test driven development to learn different technologies and concepts. We operate our classroom as closely as we can to what a top modern engineering team would do.

What does your curriculum look like?

Before the Immersive begins, we will be providing a precourse curriculum to be completed at home, prior to starting the program. The mandatory prep curriculum serves to make sure all students have a baseline level of knowledge before the Immersive Program begins.

Upon the successful completion of the precourse work, students spend 12-weeks in a classroom onsite at our Tokyo campus.

Classes are Monday through Friday from 9am to 6pm with roughly 15 hours or more of homework per week.

Are students required to be on-site during the Full-Time Immersive Program?

Daily schedules will vary depending on if students have projects or exercises. Exercises are project-based and typically anywhere from a few hours to a few days long. Each exercise is focused on a particular set of topics.

Our curriculum is completely team/pair- and project-based. Outside of lectures, students work closely with a fellow classmate or team to build an application and actively utilize the new technologies they have learned. By the end, students will have worked on a number of projects including a culminating senior project.

What is the daily schedule like?

Students, have flown in from countless countries overseas to take this course in Tokyo, many of them non-Japanese speakers. Countries include Iran, China, Germany, Brazil, Denmark, Mexico, England, Canada, South Korea, Scotland, Serbia, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, and the USA to take our courses.

Do you take non-native students or students not in Japan?

Please note Code Chrysalis computers and our curriculum are standardized on Macs and our pairing stations use OSX. We recommend a laptop with the minimum requirements for the Immersive:

(3) 2-core hyper-threaded processor

Typically, we recommend not using an operating system more than 3-4 years old.

You should also not use a computer that is actively shared with another person (especially with another software developer) since you will be making system-level configuration changes and possibly deleting information that belongs to other users.

We help the visa process by providing you supporting documents about our school and program. The Japanese consulate your working with will let you know if they need anything from us. Non-native students must work directly with the Japanese consulate in their country to <a href="http://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/index.html" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">obtain a valid visa</a> by themselves.

As for housing assistance, we do not provide any housing, but we can give advice on neighborhoods and rental companies, forward you resources, and what living in Japan is like. We recommend looking at sharehouses in the area like <a href="http://www.sakura-house.com/en" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Sakura House.</a>

Do you provide visa or housing assistance for non-native students?

Code Chrysalis is an unaccredited institution and not able to provide or sponsor visas for students. Students are responsible for acquiring their own valid, legal visa before the course begins.

Can Code Chrysalis sponsor a student visa?

We do not have a maximum amount of times you can interview. If you do not pass our technical assessment, we will provide you with feedback and resources on how to improve and be better prepared for the next technical interview.

How many times can I interview?

Our CTO Yan Fan wrote a blog post detailing our admissions process in-depth. You can find it on our Medium <a href="https://medium.com/code-chrysalis/how-to-get-into-code-chrysalis-all-about-our-admissions-process-3b4a52c4bfad" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">here.</a>

On a technical level, our assessments look for basic understanding of higher order functions, objects, and arrays in JavaScript.

A good measure of that is if you are able to solve challenges at the 8kyu or 7kyu level on <a href="https://www.codewars.com/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Codewars.</a>

Do I know enough code to join the program?

The deadline to pass the interview for each cohort is one month before the cohort start date, but exceptions can be made based on experience and skill-level.

When is the last day to apply for an upcoming cohort?

As of September 2020, 27.3% of our accepted students passed the technical interview on the first try, 40.9% pass on their second.

What is the acceptance rate for the Immersive?

Prospective students are highly motivated and have shown an initiative to learn the basics of coding. We do not discriminate based off of background or previous education. We look at what applicants character, specifically how they tackle frustration and challenges.

What kind of applicant do you look for?

During the second half of the Immersive, the curriculum is geared toward preparing for your technical job hunt through various customized lectures and workshops conducted by our outcomes team. 

What kind of job hunt support is provided during the Immersive?

We make it a rule that you begin your job hunt after you have completed the bootcamp. This rule is set in place to give ample time and space for you to focus solely on improving your skills. Having said so, we do help you kickstart your search on week 11 of the bootcamp. You will have access to a private hiring event where you can speak directly with interested companies.
